“Strange Interior”: A Surreal Collaboration

Three St. Louis artists—Hope Ainsworth, Jessica Bremehr, and Taylor Marrie—have teamed up for “Strange Interior,” a vibrant group show opening this Saturday, July 19, at Fifteen Windows Gallery on Cherokee Street. The exhibit explores and pushes ideas of interior spaces, the objects we fill them with, and how we perceive them.
The show came together through collaboration—gallery owner Bryan Walsh gave the artists free rein to choose the title, theme, and direction. “The common theme is kind of weirdness,” Walsh said. “Approaching the familiar with a twist.” In addition to traditional canvases, Strange Interior features mixed-media works, including furniture and found objects—such as a skateboard and a suitcase.

Ainsworth’s experimental work leans into that ethos. “I’ll be displaying a mix of 2D and 3D pieces,” she said. “Glue paintings, brush paintings, lamps, and fabric designs on furniture—you’ll see them finding wonder in the unremarkable, humor in pain, triumph in outsiderness.”
Bremehr will be showing both sculptural furniture and paintings embedded in handmade paper clay frames. “I grieve our culture’s relentless consumption and how easily we discard,” she writes in her artist statement. “What if these objects could speak? What would they remember? What could they become?” Her work asks viewers to slow down, listen, and find value in what’s typically cast aside.
Marrie rounds out the group with pieces she’s developed over the past year, aimed at bringing playfulness and storytelling into living spaces. Her journalistic approach to painting explores themes of self-discovery, identity, and relationship dynamics, with work that ranges from non-functional art objects to fully functional pieces. “I think living with art around you in your everyday life can improve your mood—hence improving your life in general,” she said.
The opening of “Strange Interior” will be at Fifteen Windows Gallery (3155 Cherokee St., St. Louis, MO 63118) on Saturday, July 19, from 6 to 10 p.m. The free event will feature DJ Chilly T spinning funk, soul, and hip-hop to match the mood of the show, plus beverages from Bluewood Brewery and Mighty Kind. The exhibit runs through August 16. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday, noon to 4 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, visit @fifteenwindowsgallery on Instagram.
