Mound City Messenger Presents: Missouri Loves Company Live!
Last October 9th, Mound City Messenger was launched to the public. Volunteers had been meeting for months, motivated by the desire to respond to the increasingly anemic St. Louis-focused media landscape. Following the implosion of the Riverfront Times and the beginning of KDHX community radio’s unraveling, there was a clear need for a non-commercial outlet that could fill ever-widening gaps in the local media landscape. Almost six months after that launch, we hope to have filled some of the need for independent journalism in St. Louis. We’re happy to say that the grassroots reception over the last six months has generated more than enough momentum to keep the project moving, growing, and continuing to accrue more and more community support.
To celebrate the site’s launch, the Whiskey Ring hosted an evening of live entertainment featuring speakers, poets, and live music along with screening segments from Chan Evans’ ongoing film project, “They Called Me A Sellout”. It was a wonderful evening, and we’ve decided to celebrate six months with another event. Mound City Messenger would like to invite you to Platypus in The Grove on March 30, 2025. The event will run from 2pm-6pm and is free to attend.

The afternoon’s entertainment will feature numerous offerings, including Re:Born Poetry, with readings by series hosts Matthew Freeman and Myrtie Reilly. Comedian Brandon Judd, known for his longtime hosting of The Heavy Anchor’s Comedy Shipwreck open mic, will tickle our funny bones. We want to take a moment to thank Platypus’ wonderful workers, who will be graciously opening early on a Sunday. To serve drinks and sling their delicious fare for an afternoon of entertainment.
In addition, there will be live music by Sole Loan, Tony Pupillo’s all-star passion project, featuring members of The Conformists and Skarekrau Radio. Also performing will be The Goldenrods, featuring STL’s favorite Lonesome Cowboy, Ryan Keonig, alongside bassist Kellie Everett and multi-instrumentalist Jess Atkins. Mat Rambler (of Rum Drum Ramblers) will close the evening out by spinning some records.
Wait, wait… there’s more!
Missouri Loves Company will be performing and recording a live podcast episode!
Featuring a live panel of guests including Chef Jay Bassett, Kyle Lansing, and Mat Rambler answering Missouri-themed trivia questions provided by Mark Loehrer, a curatorial assistant with the Missouri Historical Society. Of course, Melanie Hoffman and myself will be there to host the episode.
Come on down and join us! It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet many of our contributors and even learn how you can become one. We hope to see you there!
