SUMMARY:2026 Morrin Lecture: A Conversation with Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
DESCRIPTION:Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is a writer and theatre artist whose plays include Purpose\, Appropriate\, The Comeuppance\, Girls\, Everybody\, War\, Gloria\, An Octoroon and Neighbors. He is a Professor in the Practice at Yale University and serves as Vice President of the Dramatists Guild council. He has been the recipient of two Tony awards\, a Pulitzer Prize\, the MacArthur fellowship\, the Windham-Campbell Prize for Drama\, and the inaugural Tennessee Williams Award. \nBranden’s visit is in conjunction with the Tennessee Williams Festival of St. Louis and its production of ‘Appropriate’ and is co-sponsored by the WashU Departments of African & African American Studies\, American Culture Studies\, Art History & Archeology\, English\, History\, and the Center for the Study of Race\, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE2). \nAbout the Helen Clanton Morrin Lecture Series:\nHelen Clanton Morrin\, was a former writer\, editor\, public relations director\, and community service volunteer in St. Louis. From 1969 to 1988\, Mrs. Morrin was executive director of the World Affairs Council in St. Louis. In that capacity\, she was responsible for planning and directing programs\, volunteer recruitment\, membership\, and travel. From 1934 to 1941\, she was a feature writer and editor to the Globe-Democrat. After that\, she was public information director for the Post-Dispatch. Some of her high-profile interviews included Eleanor Roosevelt\, Betty Davis\, Helen Hayes\, Gen. James Doolittle\, and the Dalai Lama. She also did public relations work with Fleishman-Hillard Inc.\, St. Louis Children’s Hospital\, the Missouri Botanical Garden\, and several others. She was a past president of the Junior League of St. Louis and served on numerous boards including Mary Institute\, John Burroughs School\, St. Louis Children’s Hospital\, and the St. Louis Nanjing Sister Committee.

The Texas quintet—Jake Collinson [vocals]\, Juan Vazquez [bass]\, Austin Looney [drums]\, Jimmy LaDue [guitar]\, and Israel Garza [guitar]—wield a searing signature style unlike anything in heavy music. With calculated intensity\, it bludgeons without compromise\, draws back for a breath\, and strikes again even harder. \nGrinding full force since 2015\, the band unleashed the EP The Axis of Equality in 2016\, a split EP with Mortality Rate in 2017\, and finally\, their first full-length record Surface Noise with Closed Casket Activities in 2019. Of the latter\, Revolver exclaimed\,\n“More so than many other bands in their orbit\, the quintet excels at writing riffs that hang on through any one track without faltering\,” while Stereogum raved\,\n“It fucking rips.” Beyond highlights such as “Stronger Than Thou” [feat.\nBryan Garris of Knocked Loose] and “T emple” [feat. Brody King of God’s Hate]\, their standout single “Social Crusade” signaled success for what the band had set out to accomplish with their first LP . \nCiting influences such as Slayer’s God Hates Us All and Chimaira’s The Impossibility of Reason as well as “a ton of Machine Head\,” Judiciary perfected their blend of metal and hardcore on the 2023 second full-length record\, Flesh + Blood [Closed Casket Activities]. They have shaped the region’s communities\, history\, landscape\, and identity while inspiring generations of artists to interpret the Riverbend through paint\, photography\, and other creative expression. \nThis September\, Mooneyham Art brings together Dawn Isbell and Sarah Lorentz\, whose work earned first-place recognition in two separate regional competitions celebrating the Riverbend. Alongside the award-winning pieces\, River Runs Through It showcases a broader collection of paintings and photographs that showcases the depth of each artist’s creative practice. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITIONS\nThe River’s Reach: A Riverbend Photo Exhibition\nThe River’s Reach was an exhibition celebrating the landscape\, culture\, industry\, spirit\, and people influenced by the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Originally displayed at Jacoby Arts Center\, the exhibition invited photographers to document the many ways the rivers shape life throughout the region. \nMississippi Riverscapes: The 2026 Rivers Project Plein Air Competition\nMississippi Riverscapes invited artists to paint and draw on location at Rivers Project recreation areas\, encouraging direct observation and a personal connection with the landscape. Originally displayed at the National Great Rivers Museum\, the exhibition highlighted artwork created in response to the unique environments found throughout the Rivers Project. \nFEATURED ARTISTS\nDAWN ISBELL\nWinner\, The River’s Reach: A Riverbend Photo Exhibition\nContemporary photographer Dawn Isbell is drawn to documenting the depth of everyday life through ordinary observations. Some of her favorite images begin with familiar objects viewed from a different perspective\, revealing beauty and meaning in places that might otherwise go unnoticed.\nA U.S. Coast Guard veteran\, Isbell has rarely been without a camera. Her passion for photography began when her grandfather taught her how to use a film camera and a handheld light meter. She came of age in an era when photographers waited for film to be developed before discovering the images they had captured\, an experience that continues to shape her appreciation for the craft. Today\, she embraces the creative possibilities of digital photography while working across a wide range of subjects\, including fine art\, still life\, events\, street photography\, food\, and sports.\nWhether exploring new places\, unfamiliar landscapes\, or different ways of life\, Isbell is continually inspired by the world around her and the stories waiting to be discovered through the lens.\nHer personal philosophy is simple: “Living a Great Story!” \nSARAH LORENTZ\nWinner\, Mississippi Riverscapes: The 2026 Rivers Project Plein Air Competition\nContemporary painter Sarah Lorentz creates energetic\, striking compositions full of bold brushwork and electric color while tapping into the nostalgia of her 1990s childhood. Though the subject matter of her work ranges from evocative figurative commentaries to pastoral plein air landscapes\, the physicality of material and deliberate remnants of the process reveal the same confident hand behind the brush.\nSarah’s academic training has been traditional with apprenticeships under successful artists and extended studies abroad in Europe.
